Calcium Intake

Fueling with the milk group is one way to ensure that you are gettng enough calcium in your diet. 70 percent of Americans are lacking in ths area. When you aren't getting enough calcium from your diet your body takes what it needs from your bones.

More than 8 million people suffer from osteoporosis, a bone thinning disease. Most adults need 1,000 mg. calcium a day. Three servings of the milk group will aid you in getting enough calcium. Teens and the elderly should have four servings a day. While the milk group is the best source for calcium, there are plenty of foods that supply it. However you would need to consume 2 and a half cups of broccoli or 8 cups of spinach to get the same amount of absorbable calcium that you would get from one cup of milk. Of all the foods in the milk group, only milk is fortified with vitamin D. Vitamin D also helps your body absorb calcium.

Here are a few idea's to get you started. Start breakfast with a bowl of cereal and milk. At lunch you can add cheese to your salad. For dinner you might want to try different chesses in your pasta dishes. Finally for a hearty snack you can snack yogurt with fruit or sip on a cup of soup made with milk instead of water.
