Your body: You might want to start planning your trip to the hospital or birth center- it’s never too early to start planning. You may feel like you always have a stuffy nose, but don’t worry, these are common as well as nosebleeds. Avoid nasal sprays and medications, although a humidifier in the room you sleep might help.

Baby: The fetus is now about 5 ½ inches long and weighs about 3 ounces. It can now swallow and open its eyes.

Your body: Unless you have been advised from your health care provider, sex is a good way to relieve stress and to “touch bases” with your partner. If you’re not in the mood, that’s okay too. Some women may start experiencing vision changes. If you wear contacts, they may start feeling very uncomfortable. However, don’t go and buy an expensive pair of glasses because your vision to return to its normal condition once you’ve delivered. Also your belly button may become an “outie” due to the uterus pressing on it from behind. Some women have said that putting a Band-Aid over it will prevent it from painfully brushing against their clothes.

Baby: Your baby is now “halfway” through its development process. Everything is there and if it’s a girl, she will be growing her vagina this week.

Your body: You may feel that non of your shoes fit; this is probably due to water retention or the general loosening of ligaments happening throughout your body. Many women’s feet grow half a shoe size per child and, in most cases, this change is permanent. You should also be trying to exercise. It doesn’t’ need to be anything too strenuous, walking or swimming would be fine. If you’re not used to exercising, go slow and make sure you warm up before to avoid any injuries.

Baby: The fetus is now about 8 inches long and weighs about 8 ounces. It is covered in vernix, which is a white, cheesy “cream” that protects their skin from the long bath in amniotic fluid. Preemies are covered in vernix at birth-”posties” have almost none.

Your body: Studies have shown that 60 percent of expectant fathers show some symptoms of pregnancy. They might experience nausea, mood swings, weight gain, and even odd cravings. You should probably be feeling movement from your baby by now. You may also notice a darkening of your skin in some spots. This is call chloasma and will slowly fade once you deliver. If you happen to develop chlosama, avoid going in the sun or if you do, wear plenty of sunscreen as the sun could intensify the discoloration. Also avoid using skin bleach and if it really bothers you, try using a cover-up base.

Baby: Your little bundle measures about 5 inches this week. The bones in your baby’s body are hardening and the legs are growing longer.

Your body: You may start to realize that you are getting forgetful. This is due to hormones. Each time you go to your doctor for a checkup, they check your urine to make sure your blood sugar levels are not too high. If you have a high blood sugar level, this can develop gestational diabetes. It is very important that you maintain your blood sugar through your diet or medication to ensure you have a healthy baby.

Your body: You may be having problems with constipation as pregnancy hormones can cause the bowels to relax and not function properly. Your waist line is expanding and your clothing may be too tight. It may be time to go maternity shopping. Those around you will probably be able to figure out that you’re pregnant.

Your baby: The fetus is now covered with a very fine hair called lanugo. This will keep growing until around the 28th week. The fetus also develops a very thin layer of skin. Your fetus’s ears are almost in position now, although they are still set a bit low on the head.

Your body: Some mothers may be able to feel fetal movement (quickening), but it may also feel like gas. However, if you don’t feel anything yet, don’t worry. Some mothers can’t feel anything until about week 20. Before you know it though, you will be playing footsie with your fetus who insists on kicking you in the ribs right when you settle down for bed

Baby Your baby already has about 20 teeth just beneath the gums! He/she is about 4 inches and weighs close to 2 ounces.

Week 13
Your body: Your morning sickness should be starting to subside, which is good news for you! Also, the chance of having a miscarriage has decreased. This means that you are really having a baby! The high risk period is over so you can relax more now. Now is the time that you can start making announcements, that is, if you haven’t already. You should also be going to see the doctor again. There are several prenatal tests that need to be administered during your second trimester. They are: amniocentesis, maternal serum screening AFP, and an ultrasound. Also during this time you should make sure that you do not handle raw meat or change your cat’s litter box, if you have one. These contain toxoplasmosis, which can cause birth defects. If you do have to handle them, make sure to wash your hands very well afterward.

Baby: Your baby’s neck is fully formed and functional. He can now turn his head from side to side and measures about 3 inches. His heartbeat is beating between 120 and 160 beats per minute which is much faster than mommy’s.

Your body: Week 12 is the end of the first trimester. Congratulations! If you have had problems with nausea and moodiness, you should be able to get a break. Pregnancy does more than effect you physically, if you’ve had some odd dreams lately it’s completely normal. If you have gained between 3 and 10 pounds, then you are right on schedule. Your uterus now moves above your pubic bone. Some common side effects of pregnancy that you may be experiencing are heartburn and indigestion. Try eating small meals and stay away from fat and greasy foods.

Baby: Your baby’s urinary tract is now working. From this point, a large portion of the amniotic fluid will be the baby’s urine. The vocal cords are complete and the brain has advanced to the stage that it can transmit messages. The brain has also fully formed and the baby can now feel pain. The baby may also start sucking his thumb. Eyelids are covering the eyes and will remain closed until the seventh month to protect the optical nerve fibers.

Your body: Light complexioned women may start to become a little flushed during pregnancy. This is due to the added volume of blood in your body. During this time, you should be taking vitamins to help stay healthy and you should also be watching your iron count. Some women may want to have Chorionic Villus Sampling which determines if there are any genetic problems with your baby.

Baby: Usually by this time, the baby is about about 2.5 inches long. Little fingernails are beginning to form. The risk of congenital abnormalities is now low. However, drinking and smoking are still not okay!
