Healthy Diets

Getting children to eat healthier is not always an easy task. It takes a lot of determination and effort from your entire family. Teaching your children about good nutrition is as important as getting good grades in school, getting to bed on time and learning to have good manners. The reality is that ignoring the importance of good nutrition could result in weight problems later in life in addition with having an increased risk of developing degenerative diseases at an earlier age. Many children find it difficult to learn and even concentrate in school as a result of poor nutrition. Poorly fed children are more susceptible to being sick more often then those on a well balanced diet.

Let your children know that by not eating healthy foods will not result in you bending the rules and allow them to eat a non-nutritional food as a substitute. When you make a healthy meal and if your child does not eat it, do not make a big deal over it. The best course of action to take is to save the meal and if the child asks for food later, heat up the saved meal. You shouldn’t make something else for him/her like a hot dog and fries.

You also need to get the junk food out of your house. You shouldn’t even buy it, when you go to the grocery store. It is hard for adults, let alone children, to say no to the chocolate cake and ice cream. A good start is to offer them grapes, watermelon, apple, or any other kind of fruit. These fruits are naturally sweet and are a frequent favorite of children. You should gradually add a variety of things to their diet. For example, as a snack you might offer them carrot sticks or a cup of yogurt. If your child chooses not to eat a healthy snack then don’t give in and offer them cookies instead. Let him/her know that they will have to wait until the next meal to eat. Your child will eventually learn that the only choice, in their diet, is a healthy one.
