Week 5

Your body: By this time you have probably noticed that you are late. Now is probably a good time to see a doctor. Prenatal care is the medical care you get before the baby is born. After you go to your prenatal doctor for the first time to confirm you are pregnant, you should continue to go every month to make sure you and your baby are healthy. On your first visit, your doctor will perform several tests, most of which only have to be done once. In this week you will start noticing that your body is changing. Your breasts may be tender, you will feel tired and irritated, and you may have morning sickness. Some women may not experience this at this point and others not at all.

Baby: The embryo growing in your uterus is still very small. It is only about 1/10 of an inch. The neural tube enlarges into three parts, soon to become the brain. The placenta also begins functioning. The spine and spinal cord are growing faster than the rest of the body at this stage and may give the appearance of a tail, but this will soon disappear as the baby continues to grow.
